The honest answer: the evidence on test scores is mixed, while the evidence on distraction, focus, and the value of being present is stronger. Below are the primary sources, including the studies that disagree. We never claim phones cause a specific harm; we point to the documented value of presence and the real concerns raised by credible institutions.

When people get the chance to be fully present, many enjoy it, and some prefer it. The clearest evidence is cultural, not clinical.

The Masters Tournament prohibits patrons from bringing or using cell phones (and most recording or transmitting devices) on the grounds. It is a long-standing rule, strictly enforced with removal for violations. Coverage repeatedly describes the phone-free environment as “refreshing” and central to the tournament's unique, present, distraction-free atmosphere.
The “Michelob Ultra Guy” moment (2022 PGA Championship)

At the 2022 PGA Championship, Mark Radetic was photographed watching Tiger Woods directly while nearly everyone around him held up phones. The organic photo went viral; the brand reactively signed him afterward. The cultural resonance is in the photo, not the product.

What phones do to attention & the brain
The intuition that a nearby phone pulls at your attention is widely shared, but the strongest single study has been contested in replication. We show both sides.

This influential study reported that the mere presence of one's own smartphone, even face-down and even powered off, reduced available cognitive capacity on attention-demanding tasks, with the largest effect among the most smartphone-dependent participants.
Note: A pre-registered direct replication (Ruiz Pardo & Minda, 2022, below) failed to reproduce this “brain drain” effect, and a later meta-analysis finds the effect is at best small and inconsistent. Read it as an influential idea that has not held up cleanly in replication, not as settled science that “a phone nearby makes you dumber.”

Note: We include this disconfirming study on purpose. Citing it openly is what separates a credible research section from cherry-picking, and the broader case for presence does not depend on this single contested effect.

Mark's field research found that average sustained attention on a single screen dropped from about 2.5 minutes (2004) to roughly 47 seconds in later studies, and that recovering focus after an interruption can take significant time.
Note: These are observations of workplace and computer attention and digital multitasking generally, not a controlled experiment proving phones specifically cause the decline. Treat it as descriptive evidence of fragmented attention in a device-saturated environment.

The advisory notes that social media use is near-universal among teens (up to ~95% of teens aged 13 to 17) and that, while there can be both benefits and harms, “we do not yet have enough evidence to determine if social media is sufficiently safe” for children and adolescents during a vulnerable period of brain development. It cites research associating heavy use (e.g., 3+ hours/day) with greater risk of poor mental-health outcomes.
Note: This is an association, and the advisory itself is careful about causation. We cite it with the same caution it uses.
CDC: the youth suicide rate climbed sharply after 2007

CDC mortality data show the suicide rate among persons aged 10 to 14 declined from 2000 to 2007, then nearly tripled from 2007 (0.9 per 100,000) to 2017 (2.5 per 100,000). Rates for ages 15 to 19 and 20 to 24 also rose over the later part of the period, and suicide surpassed homicide as a cause of death for young people during it.
Note: This is trend data. The CDC brief counts deaths; it does not name a cause, and phones appear nowhere in it. The overlap with the smartphone and social-media era is the argument the researchers below make, not the CDC's.
The timing: teen depression rose right as smartphones and social media arrived

Drawing on nationally representative surveys of over 500,000 U.S. adolescents in grades 8 through 12, plus national suicide statistics for ages 13 to 18, the study found depressive symptoms, suicide-related outcomes, and suicide rates all increased between 2010 and 2015, especially among girls. Teens who spent more time on new media (social media and smartphones) were more likely to report mental-health issues, and teens who spent more time on non-screen activities (in-person time, sports, homework) were less likely.
Note: This is the timing argument, and it is correlational. Orben and Przybylski's re-analysis (next card) finds the association between screens and well-being is real but very small. We show both, on purpose.

Applying specification curve analysis (a method that runs every defensible version of the analysis at once) across three large datasets totaling 355,358 adolescents, the authors found the association between digital technology use and adolescent well-being is negative but small, explaining at most 0.4% of the variation in well-being.
Note: We include the strongest disagreeing study on purpose, the same pattern as the brain-drain replication above. The trend in the CDC's numbers is not in dispute; what explains it is.

Haidt argues that the shift to a “phone-based childhood” (smartphones plus social media plus less independent play) is a major driver of rising adolescent anxiety, depression, and self-harm since the early 2010s, proposing four harms: social deprivation, sleep deprivation, attention fragmentation, and addiction.
Note: Haidt's strong causal thesis is influential but contested among researchers, who note that much of the underlying data is correlational. We cite it as a prominent, well-evidenced argument, not as settled causal proof.

Facebook's own internal researchers studied Instagram's effect on teens over several years. One 2019 internal slide stated, “We make body image issues worse for one in three teen girls,” and reported that 32% of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse. Another internal presentation said that among teens who reported suicidal thoughts, 13% of British and 6% of American users traced the desire to kill themselves to Instagram.
Note: These are internal, mostly small self-report surveys, not peer-reviewed studies, and Meta publicly disputed the WSJ's framing. Crucially, on most of the wellbeing areas Facebook's researchers asked about, more teens said Instagram made them feel better than worse; body image among teen girls was the notable exception, not a universal finding. We cite it for what makes it distinctive, a platform's own researchers documenting harm to some teens, not as proof phones harm every child.

The film argues that social platforms are deliberately engineered to maximize engagement and attention, and lets the people who built those systems describe the persuasive-design techniques (infinite scroll, variable rewards, push notifications) from the inside. That core idea of an attention-and-engagement business model echoes what clinicians like Anna Lembke (above) describe about compulsive use.
Note: This is a persuasive documentary-drama, not evidence. Much of its weight comes from a fictional, scripted family storyline and an anthropomorphized “AI control room,” both invented for the film. Its empirical claims (notably a sharp rise in teen-girl self-harm and suicide since ~2009) are correlational and contested (the same causal debate we flag for The Anxious Generation above) and scholars have criticized it for cherry-picking research, treating correlation as causation, loose use of the word “addiction,” and a one-sided cast of ex-insiders with no dissenting experts. Meta published a formal rebuttal. We reference it as a cultural touchstone that put “engineered for engagement” into the mainstream, not as proof of harm.

The evidence on whether school phone bans improve academic outcomes is limited and mixed: some studies report gains, others find no difference. A widely cited 2016 study (Beland & Murphy) reported test-score improvements after bans in several English cities, but a later, larger replication (Kessel et al., 2020) found no effect on grades or math scores.
Note: We do not claim “phone bans raise grades.” The more defensible takeaways from the literature relate to fewer distractions and student-reported focus and well-being, not test scores.

Phone-free is becoming law
This is no longer only a research debate. In NIX's home state, a phone-restriction policy is now a legal requirement for every public school district, and the law leaves the how to each district. Schools now need a way to actually run one.

Public Act 2 of 2026 requires every Michigan public school board to implement a policy prohibiting students from using wireless communication devices on school grounds during instructional time, beginning with the 2026-2027 school year. Districts may adopt stricter rules. Exceptions exist for medically necessary devices, emergencies, and school-issued technology, and how the policy is implemented and enforced is left to each district.
